Description
A hand colored and framed map titled A New Map of The Terraqueous Globe According to the Ancient Discoveries and Most General Divisions of It Into Continents and Oceans. It has considerable visual interest, with the "Torrid Zone" lying between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, Madagascar labeled as "Menuthias Island]", and perhaps most interesting, California shown as an island with speculative text suggesting that it might have been what was called Atlantis in ancient times. This map was created by cartographer Edward Wells (1667-1727), engraved by Michael Burghers (b. 1647 or 1648, d. 1727), and first published in 1700 or 1701 in Oxford, England. There were later strikes in 1726 and 1738, and it is not clear whether this example is from 1700-1701 or one of the later ones. It has a "1" platemark below the dedication. Nicely hand-colored and framed. Examples are held at Yale University, the New York Public Library, the Library of Congress and Colonial Williamsburg, among others. Not examined out of frame. Not taken out of frame, 20" x 14-1/2" sight size
