Samariy Gurariy (Russian, 1916-1998), Semyon Timoshenko Guiding Troops, silver gelatin print, date of printing unknown, pencil signed "S. Gurariy" in Cyrillic on back, 16-1/4" x 22-3/4", wear at edges. All photographs in this collection were acquired from the estate of Gurariy. Samariy Gurariy was a Soviet photojournalist for the Moscow newspaper, Izvestia. He earned the trust of Joseph Stalin and covered many historic moments in Soviet history. After the Soviet collapse he emigrated to the US in 1995 smuggling many of his photographs with him. He is considered one of Russia�s most important historical photojournalists.
